I've recently received updates from the homes of some of my favorite foster dogs.
Honey
The retired couple that adopted Honey/Sadie are still in love with her. They took her to the vet for a regular check up and she's healthy. She's enjoying life with them going on walks, having her own chair to sleep in and just being loved and spoiled. Every time they've written they've mentioned how special a dog they got.
Heidi
Heidi has been in her new home for about two weeks now. They've renamed her Franny, which I think fits. I wrote to the couple that adopted her and she too is doing well. Practically housebroken. She already knows some commands. And she likes to go for walks! This weekend she's going camping. She's finally sleeping through the night.
Once they get some better pictures they'll pass them along to me. Since Heidi was one of my favorite young puppies that we fostered I'm glad that she's got a good home and is being spoiled and cared for. I still think her personality is a lot like Honey's.
Amber
I got an email today from the person that adopted Amber. Andrew and I have been invited over sometime to see her in her new home. So hopefully we'll be able to work something out soon.
Amber is going to obedience training and doing well. Soon she'll be taken to Shaggy Pines, a big dog park around here (with ponds, big places to run, trails, etc.), to get even more socialization and fun. She has also joined Dog Scouts of America and hopes to become more involved there over time.
Again, another one of our favorite foster dogs has a really good home. :D
I received an email today from Honey's family. Well, she's now Sadie but I still think of her as Honey. ;) This photo was sent with the email.
I was told that she's doing well. She's learning commands quickly. The crate that was borrow hasn't ever been used and won't be at this point. Honey/Sadie has been able to be left alone from the beginning and hasn't had any accidents.
She has her own chair in the living room, which I'm sure she just loves. She's enjoying her daily walks and even likes to play with some toys.
Her new family is spoiling her and happy that she's part of their life. I'm glad that she found such a great home. I'll likely keep in touch from time to time so that I'll know she continues to do well.
And I think out of all of the litter Heidi looks the most like her mom. And from what I've seen so far she has a similar personality as well.
Andrew came in with the crate, which had Howard in it. Our dogs went over to the crate to sniff. Honey kept sniffing me even though I tried to get her to look at the crate. She eventually say Howard.
We took all of the dogs outside. Honey immediate started playing with, checking out, and caring for Howard. She was really gentle with him, almost too gentle at times when he would try and bite her. She looked a little confused about why one of her puppies was back.
Throughout the evening Honey kept checking on Howard. If he got out of hand trying to play too hard she would try and pin him down. Beacon and Haven didn't have too much interest in Howard. They let Honey take care of him.
So far I haven't really seen any of the things that the family mentioned that returned him. I was told in an email that he was constantly aggressive jumping at and biting people and that he would always try and hump things. He likely has a more outgoing and dominant personality compared to his siblings but it's nothing extreme.
A few times since he has been here I've stopped him from doing something bad by grabbing his scruff and rolling him on his back. Basically what Honey was doing to him! And he has gotten mad and growly trying to bite. It wasn't any worse than other young puppies learning the ropes. Sure, if left without discipline and training Howard could learn bad habits that are hard to break. But I haven't seen anything that would make me think he has special issues that need to be worked on.
He doesn't try and jump on our dogs like other puppies have done. If he gets too close to Beacon and is growled at he backs off. Some of his personality actually seems like Honey's. Like her he doesn't like to be left alone. He must have been tired when we went to bed. He cried for about 10 minutes and then was quiet. Until 3AM. Then he cried until we got up around 6:30. I even went out and took him outside and played with him for 20 minutes. But that didn't get him tired enough.
Howard already seems pretty smart. He seems to be getting the housebreaking thing. If he's in the family room he'll go over to the sliding glass door and stand there. Every time he has done that I've taken him out and he has gone. When I got up in the middle of the night and this morning there wasn't any mess to clean up.
His coloring reminds me of Beacon. Beacon had light ears as a puppy with a small darker edge. So far today our dogs haven't really cared about Howard. Beacon has even let the puppy sniff him without getting mad.
I've already got an adoption meeting for Howard set up for tomorrow evening! Hopefully he'll be better tonight as far as crying goes or I'll be able to survive another sleepless night. And hopefully this home will be a better match for him.
Honey left with Andrew this morning to go to the vet. I won't see her again. Although I do hope to keep in touch with the couple that is adopting her. I'll miss her. She fit in so quickly and nicely here.
I need to find some time to upload photos of Honey and Howard and write about Howard. Hopefully when the puppy is sleeping later on today I can try and catch up.
Yesterday when we went to pick up Howard at Chow Hound we also got to see Amber! The person who adopted her had a crate that's too small for Amber that she wanted to donate. Since Andrew and I were going to be at Chow Hound I asked if she could meet us there.
Amber looks so big now and she's not even full grown yet. Her ears still look crazy. She has filled in, which she needed to do. She was really skinny when we had her. She had fun playing with Howard for a few minutes. It was good seeing her.
We will keep Honey until Tuesday morning when Andrew will drop her off at the vet to be spayed. Vicky will meet the couple at the vet's office to make sure they get the right dog and her health certificate.
Honey's name will be changed to Sadie. So Andrew and I will start calling her that so she starts getting used to it. I hope that I remember when I'm calling her!! That name does fit her though.
I'll still be posting photos and stories of Honey until Tuesday. I'll also continue to call her Honey when I write about her.
Yesterday we took Haven and Honey to the Boy Scout camp for them to run around. We tried to get Haven to fetch but she wasn't interested. She'd much rather run and explore. So we walked (the dogs ran) in the woods. At one point Andrew was on one hill along a power line clearing. I walked to the next hill with the girls.
Andrew tried calling Haven. I think she saw him and definitely heard him but never went to try and find him. Maybe she knew going up and down steep hills wouldn't be much fun. She and Honey did do a lot of running between us otherwise though.
Honey was once again good at staying with us or Haven. Toward the end she didn't know if she wanted to chase after Haven or stay with me. She wasn't quite as vocal as she chased Haven. Although she did bark out of frustration trying to climb some big hills. She zoomed down them chasing sticks and rocks that we tossed. She was having fun sliding on dried leaves.
The girls got home and crashed. They slept most of the night. Honey still seems a little tired today. But I'm sure she wouldn't turn down another adventure on the trails.
In other Honey news she has been sleeping in our bedroom with us and our dogs. Her second night with us she started whining from the beginning. She'd quiet down but then I'd hear her half an hour to an hour later. I eventually got a dog bed and brought her into our room. She has been sleeping in there ever since without making a noise.
Beacon and Haven still seem to like Honey. They don't have stressed or annoyed looks like they have with some of our other foster dogs. It's usually pretty easy to tell how much they like a foster.
Yesterday after Andrew got home from work we took Beacon and Honey for a walk. We ended up walking a mile to the old Boy Scout camp where we take the dogs to fetch and run around off leash. On the way there Honey walked really well on leash. She didn't pull and if anything needs to learn to keep up the pace and walk in a straight line.
Once we got to the old camp we let Beacon off leash. He of course went running around and was eager to fetch. I walked up the trail a little ways with Honey. She started getting agitated though seeing Beacon running around. We decided to let Honey run around off leash. We figured with her always wanting to be near us that she'd stick around. She doesn't seem to have the nose to the ground beagle tendency.
As soon as she was free of the leash all she cared about was herding Beacon! She was mad that he was running around "away from the pack". When he was out in the river fetching she would stand wading in the water howling at him. When he got back to shore she would chase after him nipping at his legs and butt.
Beacon didn't really appreciate Honey's herding but he wasn't ever mean to her. A couple of times he gave an annoyed growl as she launched at him as he sat waiting for Andrew to throw another stick. Every time Beacon was in the water Honey would run back and forth on the shore or in shallow water waiting for him. She didn't mind the water but didn't show any interest in swimming out to get Beacon.
After Beacon was finished fetching we took both dogs to an open field. We had Beacon running around. Honey of course was chasing after him trying to herd him back to us. Beacon quickly discovered that he's faster than Honey. So he'd run fast enough that she couldn't keep up with him. They were funny to watch. We're planning on taking Honey and Haven out this evening for a romp.
I've been working on an application for Honey yesterday and today. A retired couple was looking at another adult, mom dog in the program. But she was adopted last night. So I sent them an email and mentioned Honey and another adult dog that we have in the program. They asked some questions about Honey and determined that they were interested in her.
This morning I worked on processing their application, which was pretty easy to do. I talked with the husband of the couple for around 20 minutes! He was telling me all of these stories about dogs they've had over the years. We will be meeting this couple Saturday afternoon.
Honey's spay surgery is scheduled for Tuesday. If this couple wants to adopt her we'll do paperwork on Saturday but take her back home with us. They'll pick her up from the vet on Tuesday and take her home then.
I think that Honey will be spoiled with this couple. They're home most of the time so she'll get lots of attention. They go on quite a few walks throughout the day. And from talking with the husband he really cared about (and still does) about the dogs they've had over the years.
Honey continues to settle in here. She follows me around all of the time. She still tries to climb in my lap and get attention any time I stop moving. I think in the photo on the left she looks a little more relaxed than what I posted last night.
Last night she was quiet in the crate. I heard her whining a little before 2 so I got up and let her outside. She didn't do anything but bark at something she thought she saw (or that I didn't see). That got our dogs barking in our bedroom! After I put Honey back in the crate she whined for a minute and then was quiet the rest of the night. I don't know if she woke up and was lonely or if the static on the radio bugged her. We put NPR on for her when we went to bed but when I let her out it was just static. I changed the station to music before putting her to bed.
All three dogs seem to do their own thing. Honey hasn't showed interest in playing. Our dogs don't seem to care about her. They don't seem stressed though like they did with Raven and their not caring about her. Beacon doesn't growl if she passes by him. Last night he and Honey were both sleeping next to me as we watched TV.
This afternoon I threw a ball for Honey in the backyard. She was all over chasing but didn't care about retrieving at all. But I didn't think that she'd be into bringing a ball back to me. Other than that she hasn't shown any real interest in toys.
I still think that she's coming out of her shell as she gets used to being with us and not having to care for her nine puppies. She probably needs to catch up on some rest after a tiring eight weeks!
So far so good. She's still in the figuring out us and our house phase. She's pretty shy so far. She doesn't show much interest in our dogs or them in her. She has been submissive when they've sniffed her. Hopefully with a little time she'll start to come out of her shell.
We've seen Honey over the weeks when we've gone to Vicky's house for various things. Her puppies are really cute! They're finally up on Petfinder and I think they'll go pretty fast as long as people are looking for puppies. The photo of Honey's puppies was taken about a week ago. They've grown and changed a little since then.
Honey seems to like attention. While we were eating dinner she tried to get on the couch to sit next to me. She finally settled in at my feet. I suspect that she'll be next to me as we watch 24 tonight. Hopefully she'll be okay in the crate tonight without making much noise. She hasn't barked or made any noise so far. And when we've seen her at Vicky's in her kennel with her puppies she wags and looks excited but never barked.
Her nails were pretty long and she didn't mind my clipping them this evening. She didn't show any signs of food aggression when Andrew fed her. And so far we haven't had any accidents in the house.
Vicky got Honey when she was pregnant from a shelter that's about an hour away. In the past few months she has been working with them taking in dogs when she can. Vicky and the shelter where she came from think that Honey is around a year and a half old. She hasn't been fixed yet so when that happens a vet will be able to better determine her age.
I'm not sure when Honey will be fixed. It could be this Thursday. It'll depend on whether or not her milk dries up enough for her to have surgery. Her information has been on Petfinder for over a week now and there hasn't been any interest in her. I'm hoping that after I'm able to get some better photos and put a more detailed description of her out there that that'll spark some interest.
