Last week Andrew and I stayed at The Stewart House on Lake Malone. We met my parents there for the week. This cabin was also dog friendly so of course Beacon and Haven came along. They were good as always on throughout the 9 hour drive. They were also tired from the run Andrew took them on the previous day.
Bill and Geraldine, the couple who own the cabin and rent it out live next door. There was also a trailer (think really old thing on wheels) on the other side. Otherwise it felt like we were in the middle of nowhere in hicksville KY. We had to drive through farm fields before reaching a gravel (which was really rocks) road. We took the gravel road .4 miles of hills, holes, and ruts before we reached the cabin.
The cabin itself was quite cozy. It was decorated with a lot of antiques, including a chair made out of horseshoes. Fun stuff to look at for the week but not stuff I'd want in my own home. The main floor had three bedrooms and a full bath. An upstairs loft housed a huge Santa collection as well as a pool table, old pinball machine, and bumper pool, which we didn't know how to play (and our made up rules were waaaaay off!).
There wasn't much to do arond the area. We were in the middle of nowhere. But we did entertain ourselves by watching 80s TV shows (they did have satellite), putting (4 total) puzzles together, feeding fish bread off the dock, fetching with the dogs (Andrew also took Haven running a couple of times), playing board games and cards, kayaking, and making camp fires.
Bill let us use his paddle boat and kayak while we were there. This was my first time in either! I can do without the paddle boat. I felt like I was in low gear on a bike peddling and getting nowhere. I had fun kayaking, which makes Andrew happy since he has been trying to convince me for years that we need to get them.
Beacon and Haven had a blast. They got worn out swimming and fetching. Haven actually swam and went after the bumper. Usually she's not a big fan of swimming. She'll wade and likes the water but Beacon's definitely the swimmer. She lost interest after a few tosses though. And of course Beacon kept going until we made him stop. One session he was finally starting to look like he would give up on his own after 45 minutes, but we ended up making him stop before he collapsed.
Both dogs went off the end of the dock, something new for them. Haven hated it. Andrew had to push her each time. She kept going under too so I'm sure that didn't help. Beacon was hesitant at first but then would go off on his own to chase the bumper. He still never learned to actually jump out away from the dock rather than just plopping down right in front of it.
During one fetching session we took turns being out in the kayak. Haven always looked worried and whined because she didn't know what we were doing out there. Beacon got frustrated when we'd paddle with the bumper attached to the kayak. :P
Bill and Geraldine had two (sibling) dogs of their own, poodle mixes from Equador. They had an exchange student and when Geraldine went to visit him a few months ago she ended up shipping two dogs home. Domingo (black, male) and Kito (cream, female) were really cute. Beacon and Haven didn't seem to mind them too much when everyone was outside (all of the dogs were off leash most of the time). But if we were playing a game or eating inside by the sliding glass door and the little dogs came and barked Beacon and Haven would get riled up.
One day we rented a pontoon boat for three hours. We rode arond the lake. My mom and I also swam for a short time. It was fun looking at the scenery. The lake was made by damming up a river back in the 60s. The shoreline is mostly rocks and in some parts there are big bluffs.
As we were riding around we also saw quite a few Great Blue Herons along the way. At one point we took water on over the front of the pontoon while trying to slow down to see one up close! We did get another chance later on so I was able to attempt getting some pictures. Throughout the week we also saw them flying overhead.
Throughout the course of the week we built three fires. The first night we made cooked turkeydogs. We were going to make s'mores but it started pouring rain. That gave us an excuse to make another fire the following night.
Although we did feel somewhat silly sitting around a campfire sweating because it was 80 degrees and super humid out! We had fun so that's what counts. We even got a fire going one evening after some significant rain in the afternoon.
One morning Andrew took the kayak out for an almost 4 mile paddle.
Again, he'll be writing about this so I won't say much here. I did go
out and took some pictures of the calm morning lake with some steam
coming off of it. Everything was so still.
Overall the week in on Lake Malone was fun and relaxing. I took 616 photos and 2 videos. I narrowed down what I uploaded to 50 shots. You can see the rest of them in my Lake Malone collection. Ignore my funky numbering. I decided to add more to be uploaded after the first time I went through them all!
When we returned home things were fine. The veggies in my garden did not die. In fact I have a bunch of ripe cherry tomatoes and a few romas ready to be picked. The green peppers are starting to look good too. It must have been a dry week at home because the grass doesn't look like it grew at all!
